Keep The Change

2011 March 16

Almost everyone has a piggy bank of some sort for their change.  I keep mine in a boot.  A glass boot.  A glass beer boot.  A few months ago, my girlfriend and I decided we would keep all our change (mostly from tips at work) and deposit it into a joint money market account we opened at Ally.  So far, we have saved up almost $250.

Whenever we come home with change, we put it in the boot (I also include two dollar bills since they’re pretty rare).  When the boot fills up, we find something to watch on TV and roll change together.  I usually just get coin wrappers from my bank, but you can also buy them from stores like Walmart or Staples.  Coinstar is also available, but since the whole point of this is to save every last penny, we take the time to roll the change ourselves instead of paying a convenience fee to have a machine do it for us.  As bartenders, it doesn’t take us long to fill up our boot, but even if you just use cash on a regular basis, you can save up quite a bit using this method.  It’s easy, it’s fun, and the coins add up.  Next time, keep the change.
